Hi Everyone,

Just returned from a vacation in Puerto Morelos, Mexico. It's a small fishing village between Cancun and Playa Del Carmen on the Yucatan Peninsula. Also went to see the Mayan ruins of Tulum.

Making Custom Color Profiles For Your Camera

Today, I'm changing it up a bit. I'll show you how to make a custom color profile step by step for your camera using X-rite® ColorChecker Passport.

First, you need to take a capture of the Passport color chart with your camera in the RAW format. I'll be using a Canon 5D Mark II and opening file in Adobe Camera Raw. As in the example below...

Using the crop tool in Camera Raw, put a crop around the color chart. Click on the button in the bottom left corner of the dialog box (Save Image).

In order for profile to work, the file must be saved in the DNG format (which stands for Digital Negative). I'm saving mine as 5D MII Strobe because I used strobe lighting to capture this image. You can make different profiles for different lighting situations (such as tungsten, HMI lights and outdoor daylight).

Open the ColorChecker Passport program. Drag the DNG file you just made into the dialog box. Wait a minute or two while it automatically positions the color chart. Sometimes the position may have to be adjusted manually.

Once the color chart is positioned, click the "Create Profile" button in bottom right corner.

This is the color profile for your camera. I would recommend naming the profile with camera used and type of lighting. Leave destination alone and tell it to save. Then you're done!

Open an image in Adobe Camera Raw that you captured with your camera. Make adjustments to your liking. I'm going to use my color chart image so can see the color change (especially in the blues). Click on the icon in the dialog box that looks like a camera. You will see the "Camera Calibration" adjustment dialog.

Go to the camera profile name drop down menu and pick your camera. I picked the Canon EOS 5D Mark II Strobe because that is the specific color profile I made for my camera.

Once you made the camera profile, your colors should be dead on the money. Here's the end result...

Connecting Flight

I had an hour layover at Dallas-Fort Worth airport waiting on a connecting flight back to Atlanta. To occupy my time, I decided to get my camera out and take some pictures. That was the biggest mistake I had ever made. Within a few minutes the Dallas police were all over me. They confiscated my camera and started asking all kinds of questions. Once they reviewed the images on my camera and did a full background check, they let me go and told me to stop taking pictures. If you don't want to get hassled at the airport, learn from my mistake, don't take pictures because big brother is watching...

Alys Beach, FL

About 35 miles due west of Panama City Beach, lies a community on Hwy. 30A known as Alys Beach. The architecture is amazing. It has the feeling of a small Mediterranean town by the sea. While driving to the studio from home, I'll often come across some interesting subject matter (to me) to photograph. Seeing that I had a little extra time one morning, I dropped by The Great Gatsby which is just around the corner from the studio. Outside, there are statues that stand at least 12 ft. tall. So I grabbed the camera with a Lensbaby lens and shot several frames. Here are 3 images that I captured. I used OnOne Photoframes 4.5 in post production with selected blend modes to achieve the effects I wanted...

Remembering an Old Friend...

It's been 11 years now since Wayne has passed...seems just like yesterday. He was a great photographer. I really liked his style...especially the polaroid emulsions on glass (which I am the proud owner of 2 pieces BTW). Too bad he was taken before his prime. I can only imagine what kind of work he would have produced. Thanks my friend for inspiring me to become a photographer...

This week I did a photo shoot with Nfinity Athletics. Nfinity is the first team sport company to produce products specifically engineered for the female athlete. For this project, I did some action shots with a model wearing volleyball apparel. Thanks to Christine Shelby (Volleyball Brand Manager) and Lauren (our model) for making this shoot go smoothly...we had a great time!

Amicalola Falls

This past weekend, I went on a day hike in Amicalola Falls State Park. Amicalola is a Cherokee word meaning tumbling water. The falls are the highest east of the Mississippi River. It is located just north of Dawsonville, GA and at the southern most end of the Appalachian Trail on Springer Mountain. Here are a few pics from this series...

Recently, I went on a location shoot for Quadras Integrated to a tree farm in Monroe, GA. During my "free" time (lunch break), I was able to experiment with a Lensbaby Composer with wide angle adapter on a Canon 1Ds Mark II. Nik Silver Efex Pro was used in post production.

Last Week's Projects

Last week was fairly busy for me. I had the opportunity to work as a digital tech for Jill Wachter. She is a fashion photographer out of NYC. We spent the day shooting business executives here in Atlanta. Check out her website at www.jillwachter.com.
I was fortunate to have picked up a new client with the economy as bad as it is. Most of the pics will be used as drop outs for their website. I was able to do some artistic shots also. Here is a before and after. I made my own background and did some "light painting" with a Wacom Intuos 3 graphics tablet.

All images were shot with the Canon 1Ds Mark III. Here are a couple of selective focus detail shots with the Lensbaby bendable lens.

Last March, I traveled to Des Moines, IA to assist photographer Colleen Duffley on a photo shoot for 2 weeks. Most of the time was spent working indoors. The only free time was on the weekend.
